Bali Bombers...

This just struck me as a little ironic - three men who killed 202 people in Bali a couple of years ago want to be executed painlessly. Beheading - and not with a butter knife - rather than a firing squad. One might, of course, ask where these sensibilities were when they were plotting to kill as many as possible without reference to making the process painless. Asking that, however, would be gauche.

On the other hand, they're not asking to be let go (though I assume that would work for them too). They're still looking death squarely in the eye. Is that a saving grace?

Execution is barbaric enough without insisting that it be as painful as possible.

Who cares if they tried to spare their victims pain? Do we let their barbarism control how we respond?

Isn't the whole point that we're more moral than they are and thus have the right to take their lives?

I have no argument with the first proposition, but the second always struck me as a non sequitr.

I don't know. They certainly were naughty boys though. In the end, there is no proper punishment for what they did. No justice can be wrung out of the situation. Certainly the law has nothing to say about this (the Justice part, I mean). As for the death penalty being an outgrowth of morality, I've never seen it as that. Instead, I see it as soemthing that society feels it needs to do to keep control. Whether society is right or wrong is a different issue. It is, I think, analogous to the need to lock people away.

No one should be executed painfully. Or at all IMHO. The more we participate in harming others, the more we are diminished. If no judgment is adequate to the crime, why not let history or God be judge and just incarcerate them?

Just wondering why they might think they're entitled to a choice.

To answer your question, All grace (the proverbial stepping stone of soul development) is saving, and there is no grace in the lives of these men.
